I remember when I was younger how I thought I was going to live my adult life. Although I was pretty naive about certain things, I also realized that the process of creating the wealth that I would need to achieve some of my goals was going to require education and work, both of which I was not afraid to get or apply.
Life Gets in the Way
As the years rolled on, something happened, something that many of us have a clear idea about – life. That’s right, somewhere along the way of my achieving great fortune and success life came screaming in a most profound way.
While I thought that by the time I was thirty years old that I would be traveling the globe, visiting Machu Pichu and The Lost City of the Inca’s or exploring the Great Pyramid at Giza, I never suspected in my wildest imagination that I would be working as a plumber in the construction industry wondering what the heck had happened! Where did I go wrong? Where did my plan go astray!
The Blame Game
For some time I blamed others and when that didn’t satisfy me I blamed circumstances, but in the end I knew that the problem had been me all along. Yes, I had dreams, but I wasn’t building them. To be completely honest, I was working on building someone else’s dreams and spending my time, my most precious commodity, on helping them achieve their vision of the future rather than my own.
There are times in our lives when our thinking gets in the way of our progress. Notice I said “our” thinking. I’m not referring to making excuses, but rather thoughts like “I can’t do anything else right now, I’m too busy already,” or “I just don’t have enough money to get something else started.” While there are obviously challenges that we all face, these challenges are primarily the road blocks that we set up in front of our own paths.
Use Your Common Sense
When I talk about building your own dreams I am not saying that you have to go to your job, explain to your boss why he or she is the most ignorant S.O.B. on the planet and you can’t believe that you tolerated them this long and go off and start building your empire. That’s ridiculous.
A job, while I can think of many other things to spend your time on, can be very crucial and HELPFUL if you have the proper long-term thinking. I know that you may “hate” your current employment, but you need to shift your thinking to a place where those “negative” feelings are used towards a positive goal. Believe me, I get it…I used to struggle to get out of bed to go to work, but I made a decision to change things for the better. That’s right, I MADE A DECISION and making a choice is a great starting place to head towards your goals.
Being employed is also a great place to start to build that empire you were thinking about. While your job will take up a lot of time and energy, it will also give you the steady income to pay your current bills which will keep your stress down and can also be used as a mighty motivating force to keep you working on the small home business you are starting to build.
Take Little Steps
Big things happen to little things over time. If you have never done that whole “take a penny and double it every day and see how much you have in a month” thing, then you should. It is a fantastic exercise and exemplifies what happens when you take little steps towards your goal. The main thing is make a decision and back that decision up with action. Move towards what you are wanting to achieve by making small steps consistently everyday towards those goals. Over time you will be amazed by what you accomplished and you will also know that you are building your dreams and not someone else’s.
